What is BMI (Body Mass Index)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical value derived from your weight and height that helps assess whether you fall within a healthy weight range. It is widely used by healthcare professionals and organisations like the World Health Organization (WHO) as a screening tool for weight-related health risks. While BMI does not measure body fat directly, it provides a useful general indicator.
How to Use This BMI Calculator
1. Enter your weight in kilograms (kg) in the first field.
2. Enter your height in centimetres (cm) in the second field.
3. Click "Calculate BMI" to see your BMI value and weight category.
4. Compare your result with the standard BMI ranges listed below.
BMI Formula
BMI is calculated using the formula: BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)2. For example, if you weigh 70 kg and your height is 170 cm (1.70 m), your BMI = 70 / (1.70 x 1.70) = 24.22.
According to WHO standards, the BMI categories are: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), Overweight (25.0 to 29.9), and Obese (30.0 and above). For the Indian population, some experts recommend lower thresholds due to higher body fat percentages at lower BMI values.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a general screening tool and may not be accurate for athletes, bodybuilders, pregnant women, or elderly individuals. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. For a more detailed assessment, consult a healthcare professional.
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
While the WHO standard considers 18.5 to 24.9 as normal, some Indian health guidelines suggest that a BMI above 23 may indicate increased risk for Indians due to differences in body composition. A BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 is often considered ideal for the Indian population.
How often should I check my BMI?
Checking your BMI once every few months is sufficient for most adults. If you are actively trying to lose or gain weight, you may check it more frequently to track progress.
