Indian Numbering System
The Indian numbering system is different from the international system. While the international system groups digits in sets of three (thousands, millions, billions), the Indian system groups the first three digits and then subsequent groups of two digits. This gives us place values like Thousand, Lakh (1,00,000) and Crore (1,00,00,000).
For example, the number 12,34,567 is read as "Twelve Lakh Thirty-Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-Seven" in the Indian system, whereas in the international system it would be 1,234,567 or "One Million Two Hundred Thirty-Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-Seven".
How to Write Numbers on a Cheque
When writing a cheque in India, you need to write the amount in both figures and words. The word format typically follows the pattern: "Rupees [Amount in Words] Only". For example, for ₹5,25,000, you would write "Rupees Five Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand Only". Always write "Only" at the end to prevent tampering.
Key tips for writing cheques:
1. Start writing from the very beginning of the line to prevent additions.
2. Draw a line after "Only" to fill any remaining space.
3. Do not leave gaps between words.
4. The amount in words must match the amount in figures exactly.
Lakh and Crore System
In the Indian system: 1 Lakh = 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand), 1 Crore = 1,00,00,000 (ten million). This tool supports numbers up to 99 Crore (99,99,99,999). The system is widely used in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka for financial and official documents.
