What is CGPA?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a grading system used by many schools and universities in India to evaluate academic performance. Instead of percentage marks, students receive grade points on a scale (usually 0-10). CGPA represents the average of grade points obtained in all subjects, excluding the sixth additional subject in CBSE. Different institutions use different formulas to convert CGPA to percentage.
How to Use This Calculator
Select your grading system from the dropdown (CBSE, VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, or Generic). If you select Generic, you can enter a custom multiplier. Then enter your CGPA and click "Convert to Percentage" to see your equivalent percentage and grade classification.
CGPA to Percentage Formulas
Different universities use different conversion formulas:
CBSE: Percentage = CGPA x 9.5
VTU: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10
Anna University: Percentage = CGPA x 10
Mumbai University: Percentage = 7.1 x CGPA + 11
For example, a CGPA of 8.5 under CBSE equals 8.5 x 9.5 = 80.75%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 9 CGPA good in CBSE?
Yes, a CGPA of 9 in CBSE is excellent and corresponds to approximately 85.5% (9 x 9.5). This indicates that the student has scored an A1 grade in most subjects, which is the highest grade in the CBSE grading system.
How is CGPA calculated in CBSE?
In CBSE, CGPA is calculated by taking the average of grade points obtained in the five main subjects (excluding the sixth additional subject). Each subject is graded on a 10-point scale where A1 = 10, A2 = 9, B1 = 8, B2 = 7, C1 = 6, C2 = 5, D = 4, and E = fail.
Why do different universities use different formulas?
Each university designs its grading system based on its evaluation methodology, marking standards, and academic traditions. The conversion formula is calibrated to approximate the equivalent percentage that students would have scored under a traditional marking system. Always use the formula specified by your institution for official purposes.
