Water Intake Calculator
Find out how much water you should drink daily based on your weight, activity level and climate.
What is Daily Water Intake?
Daily water intake refers to the total amount of water your body needs each day to function properly. Water is essential for regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients, flushing toxins, lubricating joints and supporting digestion. The amount you need depends on several factors including your body weight, physical activity level, climate, and overall health. While the popular "8 glasses a day" rule is a reasonable starting point, individual needs can vary significantly.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your body weight in kilograms, select your activity level and the type of climate you live in. Click "Calculate Water Intake" to see your recommended daily water consumption in litres, glasses (250 ml each) and fluid ounces. The calculator adjusts the base requirement based on how active you are and whether you live in a hot climate where you lose more water through sweat.
Formula Used
Base Intake: Body Weight (kg) x 35 ml
Activity Adjustment: Sedentary: no change; Light: +20%; Moderate: +40%; Active: +60%; Very Active: +80%
Climate Adjustment: Hot climate adds another 20% to the total. Cold climate has no extra adjustment.
For example, a 70 kg person with moderate activity in a normal climate needs: 70 x 35 = 2,450 ml base, plus 40% = 3,430 ml (about 3.4 litres or ~14 glasses).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does tea, coffee or juice count towards daily water intake?
Yes, all fluids contribute to your daily hydration. However, water is the best choice as it has no calories or additives. Caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee have a mild diuretic effect but still provide net hydration. Sugary drinks should be consumed in moderation.
How do I know if I am drinking enough water?
The simplest indicator is the colour of your urine. Pale yellow (like lemonade) indicates good hydration. Dark yellow or amber means you need more water. Other signs of dehydration include dry mouth, fatigue, headache and dizziness.
Can I drink too much water?
Yes, drinking excessive amounts of water in a short time can lead to a condition called hyponatraemia (water intoxication), where sodium levels in the blood become dangerously low. This is rare but can occur during extreme endurance events. Spread your water intake throughout the day rather than drinking large amounts at once.
