Electricity Cost Calculator
Calculate electricity consumption cost from wattage, usage hours and your electricity rate.
What is a Unit of Electricity (kWh)?
A unit of electricity, also known as a kilowatt-hour (kWh), is the amount of energy consumed when a 1,000-watt appliance runs for one hour. For example, a 100-watt bulb running for 10 hours consumes 1 kWh (1 unit). Your electricity bill is calculated based on the number of units consumed during the billing period multiplied by the per-unit rate charged by your electricity provider.
How to Calculate Electricity Cost
The formula is straightforward:
Units (kWh) = (Wattage x Hours Per Day x Number of Days) / 1000
Total Cost = Units x Electricity Rate per kWh
For example, if you run a 1,500-watt air conditioner for 8 hours a day for 30 days at ₹7 per unit: Units = (1500 x 8 x 30) / 1000 = 360 kWh. Total Cost = 360 x 7 = ₹2,520.
How to Read Your Electricity Meter
Most modern homes have digital electricity meters. To find your consumption, note the meter reading at the start and end of a period. The difference gives you the number of units consumed. Your electricity bill also shows the per-unit rate, which you can use in this calculator. Rates vary by state, provider and consumption slab in India.
Common Appliance Wattages
Here are typical wattages for common household appliances: LED Bulb (7-15W), Ceiling Fan (70-80W), Television (80-200W), Refrigerator (100-250W), Washing Machine (300-500W), Air Conditioner (1,000-2,000W), Water Heater/Geyser (1,500-3,000W), Iron (750-1,500W), Microwave (600-1,200W). Knowing these values helps you estimate your electricity bill accurately.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average electricity rate in India?
Electricity rates in India vary by state and consumption slab. On average, residential rates range from ₹3 to ₹10 per unit. Check your latest electricity bill for the exact rate applicable to your area and consumption level.
How can I reduce my electricity bill?
Use energy-efficient appliances (5-star rated), switch to LED lighting, use air conditioners at 24-26 degrees Celsius, turn off appliances when not in use, and consider solar panels for long-term savings.
What is the difference between Watts and kWh?
Watts (W) measure the rate of power consumption at any instant. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure the total energy consumed over time. A 1,000W appliance running for 1 hour uses 1 kWh. Your electricity bill charges you per kWh consumed.
